Rams work with Food Bank to help alleviate hunger

By Greg Urbanoski

Fans coming to the University of Regina Rams game against the University of Manitoba Bison are going to see the Rams in action on and off the field.

Prior to battling it out on the gridiron, the team will be teaming up with the Regina Food Bank to help fight hunger and serve their community.

There will be barrels manned by Food Bank volunteers, whom will be accepting donations of non perishable food items. If you make a donation the gate admission will be cut from $17.50 to $10 and for season ticket holders, a donation will enable them to hold on their game ticket to give to a friend later in the season.

“This is one of the ways the Rams contribute to the community,” said Bill Thomson, Rams director in charge of season ticket sales.

“The Rams believe in giving back to the community, and we really saw it last year for the Rolling Stones 50-50 draw where we were able to make a contribution of $5,000 to the North Central Community Services. We’ve followed it up with other efforts to help out places like Sofia House and the Canadian Cancer Society.”

The Rams approached the Food Bank prior to the season and asked about their interest in teaming up for such an event. Thomson said the Food Bank was very enthusiastic about the idea and offered to help man the donation barrels.

“The Food Bank has been very positive about this when we brought it up with them,” said Thomson.

“I believe we’ve got to do this as part of the mandate of this organization. People have to give back to their communities and that’s what we want to do.”

Cheques made out to the Regina Food Bank will also be accepted in lieu of Food. The game starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 1st at Mosaic Stadium.
