Four Rams Selected for CFL Evaluation Camp

TORONTO, Ont. * Four members of the University of Regina Rams will participate in this weekend’s 2007 TransGlobe CFL Evaluation Camp, an event at which 52 non-import players from the CIS and NCAA will showcase their skills for scouts and coaches in the CFL.

Wide receiver Chris Bauman, linebacker Clark Gates, slotback Chris Getzlaf, and linebacker Steve Wilson will all represent the Rams at the camp. All four players are eligible for the 2007 CFL draft, scheduled to be held via conference call on May 2.

At 6’5” and 215 lbs., Bauman’s combination of speed and skill has proven to be a difficult combination for opposing defenders over his three-year career as a Ram. He recorded at least 200 receiving yards two times in the 2006 season, including a Rams single-game record of 218 against Simon Fraser on Sept. 23. Bauman set Rams single-season records in both receiving yards (923) and receptions (42) this year and sits third on the team’s all-time list with 1705 career receiving yards, despite only playing three seasons. He was named to the CIS All-Canadian First Team

Listed at 6’7” and 235 lbs., the 22-year-old Gates finished second on the team with 43 tackles during the 2006 season. He also tied a team single-season record after recording three interceptions during the regular season. Gates tied for the team lead in sacks with four and had a total of 10 tackles for loss.

Getzlaf has been one of quarterback Teale Orban’s favourite targets during his first two seasons as a slotback for the Rams. Getzlaf collected nine touchdown passes during 2006 and finished second on the team in both pass receptions (41) and receiving yards (786). He was a key player in the Rams’ comeback win over Saskatchewan on Oct. 14, pulling in 195 receiving yards in the game. Getzlaf was one of three Rams to be named to the CIS All-Canadian First Team.

For the second consecutive year, Wilson led the entire CIS in tackles during the 2006 season. He registered 90 tackles over the course of the regular season, and his career total of 227 after three seasons ranks third in Rams history. Wilson had seven tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble. He was named to the CIS All-Canadian Second Team.

Last year, 48 athletes participated in the camp, with 25 of those players going on to be selected in the 2006 draft. Complete information on the camp can be found on the CFL’s site at http://www.cfl.ca/index.php?module=page&id=296.
