Rams looking to impress Alberta recruit

By Greg Urbanoski

The University of Regina Rams are doing their part to reverse the population drain to Alberta.

The Rams hosted Brenden Bennett, 17, a 6’1”, 269 lb offensive and defensive lineman who played with Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks and is looking to graduate in June.

Bennett played centre on the O-line and some defensive tackle, but primarily played the O-Line. Bennett is looking to further his football career and put together some highlight film and heard from the University of British Columbia, University of Calgary and the University of Regina Rams.

“I got a call from Coach McCrystal to come out and visit and so far its been pretty good,” said Bennett.

“I toured the Rams facility and it’s pretty impressive. I also did some physical testing out here so they could see what I can do.”

Bennett would probably concentrate on playing offensive line and if he decides to choose the Rams, would likely red-shirt while he picked up the skills to compete at the university level.

“I talked to the coaches about what sort of things I would be doing if I was here and I really like the facilities and opportunities here,” said Bennett

“I just talked to UBC but I went out to the U of C to take a look around. The U of R is close to my home and it is not as big and it is easier to get around than the U of C. So far the U of R is looking better in terms of their team philosophy.”

Bennett has set himself a quick deadline to make a decision before he graduates high school. If he chooses the University of Regina, he wants to take classes towards a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences degree.
