Bauman Selected First Overall in CFL
Canadian Draft
 The Hamilton Tiger-Cats paid the University
of Regina Rams' Chris Bauman quite the compliment on
Wednesday morning, selecting the talented 6'5" receiver with the
first overall selection in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft.
Bauman is coming off of an outstanding 2006 season in which he
was named to the All-Canadian First Team and the Canada West
All-Star Team. He led the entire CIS in both receiving yards
(923) and touchdown receptions (10) during the regular season and
also led Canada West in yards per catch (22.0) and catches (42).
Bauman rewrote the Rams' record book on several occasions,
setting school single-season records in receiving yards and
receptions and a single-game record with 218 receiving yards
against Simon Fraser on Sept. 23.
"We're extremely excited for him," Rams head coach Frank
McCrystal said after the selection. "He's been a quality player
for us for the last
three years and we're very confident that he'll represent the
Rams and
the University of Regina very well at the professional level."
Bauman becomes the first Canada West player to be taken with the
first
overall selection since the 2000 draft, when the Saskatchewan
Roughriders took LB Tyson St. James from UBC with the top pick.
Jason Clermont, taken fourth overall by the B.C. Lions in the
2002
draft, is the only other Ram to have been selected in the first
round of
the CFL draft. Bauman, who hails from Brandon, Man., becomes the
10th U
of R player to be drafted since the Rams entered the CIS ranks in
1999.
