Three Rams Selected in CFL Canadian Draft

TORONTO, Ont. - Highlighted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' selection of Chris Bauman at No. 1, three members of the University of Regina Rams were selected on Wednesday in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft. Offensive lineman Ryan Ackerman and receiver Chris Getzlaf were taken in the later rounds.

Bauman became the first player in U of R history to be taken with the first overall pick in the CFL draft, and just the second Ram to break into the first round. He led the entire CIS in both receiving yards (923) and touchdown receptions (10) during the regular season and also led Canada West in yards per catch (22.0) and catches (42).

Ackerman won't have to travel very far to begin his first strides towards a CFL career. A resident of Regina who played for the Thom Collegiate Trojans before enrolling at the U of R, the 6'4", 288 lb. offensive tackle was taken in the fourth round (28th overall) by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Getzlaf was taken by the Tiger-Cats in the fifth round (33rd overall) and will attend his first CFL camp with Bauman in Hamilton. Like Bauman, Getzlaf was a member of the 2006 CIS All-Canadian First Team and the Canada West All-Star Team. He finished second in Canada West and third in the CIS with 786 receiving yards during the regular season and was also second in the CIS with nine touchdown receptions.

"It's fantastic to see these three guys get the opportunity to play at the next level," Rams head coach Frank McCrystal said. "It's a great reflection on both the program and the university. Getzlaf and Bauman will have the chance to play together in the CFL and Ryan will have the chance to play in his hometown."

Regina trailed only McMaster (4) with three players selected in the 2007 draft. In their eight-year history at the CIS level, the Rams have now had 12 players selected in the CFL draft.

McCrystal and Ackerman will be available for further comment and interviews at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the Rams' headquarters located on the U of R campus.
