Rams Looking to Draw Full House to Next Poker Tournament.

The University of Regina Rams Football Club is getting close to drawing a full house following its Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament held April 26.

This is the second tournament put on by the Rams and drew 63 players taking part in the tournament, organized by Casino Regina. Dan Thibault, tournament organizer for the Rams, said the event, which brought in $3,100 for the club, is a growing event and revenue generator for the club.

“We’d like to have it four times a year,” said Thibault. “Right now we can have it twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, and Casino Regina does an excellent job of putting this one and making everyone feel at home.”

Jason McKenzie felt at home as he walked home with a first place prize of $1,100.

“This is the type of tournament where it doesn’t matter if you have had any previous poker experience or not,” said Thibault. “It’s a friendly environment and the staff will help make sure you are comfortable with what is going on.

“In fact, it is tougher for experienced players to play against rookies because it is tough to know when amateurs are bluffing or not. I’d say at least half of the people in the tournament were not what you would consider to be strong players and they did very well.”

The tournament’s friendly atmosphere is in contrast to what many might see on television coverage of poker tournaments. This was a deliberate choice by the Rams and Casino Regina to attract people who might not normally be found at a poker table and taking advantage of Molson’s beverage refreshments.

The next tournament is scheduled for October with information to be posted at a later date. Thibault said the attendance by players like Jason Clermont, who contributed prizes, helped draw players, he hoped to see more female players take part in the next tournament.
