New Rams recruit
wants to serve and protect
By Greg Urbanoski
Mike Principalli
likes what he sees of the University of Regina Rams.
Principalli, 20, is
a 6’4" 260 lb offensive tackle who was a starter for the
last two years with the Calgary Colts of the Prairie Junior
Football Conference. Principalli was in Regina Tuesday to meet
with Rams Head Coach Frank McCrystal and tour the Rams facilities
at the University of Regina campus.
"A friend of
mine told me about the Rams and I got a call from Coach and here I
am," said Principalli.
"I’m doing
testing on height, weight, my time in the 40, and vertical leap
today and looking around. I talked with some people about making
the switch from Junior to University football and I thought I
would like to see what was out there in terms of schools."
In addition to
testing at the Rams facilities, Principalli also got a tour of the
facilities and was definitely impressed.
"They have
great facilities, beautiful facilities," said Principalli. I’ve
been in the (Canadian Football League Calgary) Stampeders
facilities and the Rams facilities are like a NFL teams facilities
compared to what they have."
Principalli is
looking to pursue a degree in Police Studies, even though there is
pressure from the Calgary Colts to stay for another year of Junior
Football.
"I’m not
really looking at other schools," said Principalli.
"Definitely the Rams story is a big thing in me looking at
coming here.
"The support
they get from their fans is fantastic, they’ve got a really good
fan base compared to what you would find in other places."
If Principalli
chooses the Rams, he is prepared in making the leap from Junior to
University football.
"Hey, if I was
starting, that would be great, but I’d like to compete to be one
of the top seven spots for reserves on the O-Line."
