McCrystal Named Frank Tindall Trophy
Winner
TORONTO, Ont. - Canadian University
Sport announced Thursday morning that University of Regina Rams
head coach Frank McCrystal has earned the Frank Tindall Trophy as
its 2007 Coach of the Year.
McCrystal led the Rams to a team-record six-win regular season
this year and reached the Hardy Cup final for the first time
since 2002. Regina’s biggest wins of the year came in
back-to-back weeks at the expense of provincial rival
Saskatchewan - first in the final week of the regular season to
earn home field advantage for the conference semifinal, then
seven days later in the first round of the playoffs.
McCrystal has been coaching the Rams for the past 24 years,
including all nine seasons since Regina joined the CIS and Canada
West in 1999. Prior to 1999, he had been on the sidelines for the
Rams’ final 15 campaigns in the Canadian Junior Football League,
leading his teams to seven national championships and receiving a
pair of CJFL Coach of the Year awards.
Under McCrystal’s tutelage, a total of 12 U of R players have
been drafted by Canadian Football League teams, including
receivers Chris Bauman (first overall by Hamilton in 2007) and
Jason Clermont (fourth overall by B.C. in 2001). Five former U of
R players are currently on professional rosters, including Bauman
(Hamilon), Clermont (B.C.), Chris Getzlaf (Saskatchewan), Neal
Hughes (Saskatchewan), and Jon Ryan (Green Bay Packers).
Saint Mary’s Steve Sumarah, Bishop’s Leroy Blugh, and Queen’s Pat
Sheahan were the other finalists for the Frank Tindall Trophy.
