Quarterback Teale Orban and the University of Regina Rams'
passing game finished off the drives, but it was the team's
running backs who carried the load in a 37-24 win over the
Simon Fraser Clan on Saturday.
Orban went 22-for-35 with 254 yards and four touchdowns in
Coquitlam,
B.C., to move the Rams to 3-1-0. Orban also ran nine yards for
a
touchdown.
But none of Orban's touchdown passes needed to exceed 14 yards thanks to the running of Graham Mosiondz.
Mosiondz carried the ball 20 times for 179 yards. Backup
running back
Derek Belvedere added 11 rushes for 90 yards.
"We ran it like crazy," said Rams head coach Frank McCrystal.
"Our
O-line was very good. We are a more complete football team than
we were a year ago."
The Rams opened up a 21-0 lead in the first 28 minutes of play
against
the Clan as Orban tossed touchdowns passes of 14, two and 10
yards to
Jared Ralko, Chad Goldie and Brenden Owens, respectively.
Simon Fraser got on the board with 53 seconds left in the half
when
rookie running back Jaiden Smith scampered into the endzone
from five
yards out.
As rain started to fall in Coquitlam, the Clan (0-5-0) gave
Regina
something to think about in the third quarter, outscoring the
Rams 17-7
in the frame.
First, quarterback Jason Marshall took the ball in for a major
from the
one-yard line less than two minutes into the quarter.
The Rams regained their 14-point lead four minutes later when
Orban
found Jordan Sisco for a seven-yard touchdown.
The Clan's Chris Passaglia scored the final 10 points of the
quarter as
he caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Marshall, converted it
and
kicked a 43-yard field goal to leave Regina with a slim 28-24
lead
heading into the fourth.
Marshall went 17-for-30 for 255 yards Saturday. Nine of those completions for 182 yards went to Aaron Hargreaves.
The Rams, however, kept the Clan off the board in the final 15
minutes,
Orban scored his rushing touchdown and Regina got two points
when Simon Fraser conceded a safety. Regina kicker Perri
Scarcelli converted all five Regina touchdowns.
Middle linebacker Mat Nesbitt led the Rams defensively with 13
tackles
and a forced fumble. Cornerback Tamon George, making his second start for the Rams, had seven tackles and an interception.
"We lost our focus for a bit, but we got it back," said
McCrystal.
"That's something we have to work on, but we rebounded from it
(Saturday)."
In the other B.C.-based Canada West game Saturday, the
University of
Saskatchewan Huskies squeaked past the UBC Thunderbirds 19-16.
Dathan Thomas and Ben Coakwell each rushed for Huskies
touchdowns in the pouring rain as the Dogs moved to 4-1-0 on
the season. UBC fell to 2-3-0.
The Alberta Golden Bears topped the Calgary Dinos 17-9 in the
other game Saturday. Alberta sits tied for fourth place
with UBC while the Dinos are two points back at 1-3-0.”
