Edmonton Eskimos Sign Nesbitt
EDMONTON, Alta. - The Edmonton Eskimos announced Monday that the team has
signed former University of Regina Rams linebacker Mat Nesbitt to a contract.
Nesbitt, who just finished his final season of CIS eligibility, became the
first Ram to win a major CIS postseason individual award after he was named
the CIS Defensive Player of the Year in November.
The 6'3", 225 lb. linebacker led Canada West and finished second in the
CIS with 64 tackles after returning to the Rams following a season with the
CJFL's Okanagan Sun. Nesbitt also had two sacks, an interception, two pass
breakups, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery as the Rams improved from
sixth to third in th league in rushing defence.
"Given his ability to long snap, Mat is capable of contributing on
special teams right away," Rams head coach Frank McCrystal said.
"He's very athletic, runs well, tackles well, and has the toughness to
compete at the next level."
Nesbitt will be one of two former Rams on the Eskimos' roster. Fullback Mike
Maurer, who played for the Rams while the team in the CJFL, has played in the
CFL since 1997 and for Edmonton since the 2005 season.
