Orban named Sask Sport Male Athlete of
the Year
REGINA, Sask. - Sask Sport Inc. named its 2007 award recipients at its annual
banquet on Wednesday night, naming University of Regina fourth-year
quarterback Teale Orban its Male Athlete of the Year.
Orban, who quarterbacked the Rams to their finest Canada West regular season
in program history, led the nation with 22 touchdown passes and threw for a
conference-high 2273 passing yards. He became Canada West's all-time leader in
touchdown passes late in the season and set U of R single-season and
single-game records in pass completions and pass attempts.
"Teale and his family were humbled and surprised at the selection,"
Rams head coach Frank McCrystal said. "We as a program feel very honoured
that Teale was recognized out of this diverse group of talented
athletes."
Also nominated for the award were University of Saskatchewan wrestler Jeff
Adamson and national taekwondo champion Lucian Phillips.
Orban becomes the first football player to win the award since North
Battleford's Rueben Mayes won consecutive honours in 1984 and 1985 before
embarking on a six-season career in the National Football League with the New
Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks.
