Chris Mercer commits to Rams for 2009 season
REGINA,
Sask. - The University of Regina's football team announced
Monday that offensive lineman Chris Mercer has committed to the
Rams for the 2009 season.
Mercer, a 6'7", 295 lb. tackle, spent the last three seasons
with the Saskatoon Hilltops of the Prairie Football Conference.
Mercer's Hilltops won the Canadian Bowl in 2007 and were league
champions in both 2007 and 2008.
Last season, Mercer was named a Canadian Junior Football League
All-Canadian, the PFC's Outstanding Offensive Lineman, and a PFC
All-Star. He was a member of the PFC's All-Rookie Team in 2006.
"He's going to be a good one," Rams offensive coordinator Bernie
Schmidt said. "He's a big, strong guy and we fully expect him to
challenge for (graduated left tackle Ryan) Ackerman's position."
Prior to Mercer's two seasons with the Hilltops, he was a
two-way standout for E.D. Feehan Catholic High School, where he
played both defensive end and offensive line.
Mercer, the first member of the Rams' 2009 recruiting class,
will have four seasons of CIS eligibility remaining.
