Rams, Huskies prepare for clash in
Saskatoon
With both teams coming off of season-opening wins last week, the
University of Regina Rams (1-0) will travel to Saskatoon for a
game against the No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (1-0) at
Griffiths Stadium on Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Rams opened their 2009 season last Friday with a convincing
28-10 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in a game highlighted by
the performance of quarterback Marc Mueller, who completed 24 of
his 34 passes for 360 yards and two touchdowns in his first CIS
start. That same evening, the Huskies were embroiled in a battle
with the Calgary Dinos. After the four regulation quarters ended
with the two teams deadlocked at 20, Saskatchewan finally earned
a 34-33 win after a failed two-point conversion attempt on
Calgary’s second overtime possession.
“The Huskies are always a well-prepared football team and they
execute very well,” Rams head coach Frank McCrystal said. “Our
guys are excited and confident and looking forward to the
challenge of playing the No. 3 team in the country.”
Jordan Sisco was Mueller’s top receiver in the win, catching
seven balls for 93 yards. Mark McConkey had five receptions for
70 yards and a touchdown, while Brenden Owens had two catches
for 67 yards and a major. On the ground, Graham Mosiondz rushed
15 times for a game-high 86 yards. Second-year cornerback Jamir
Walker led the Rams defensively, recording two interceptions and
an additional pass breakup.
Regina’s win over the Bisons came at great cost to the Rams, who
likely lost the services of starting left guard Devin Hillier
(knee) and cornerback Daniel Knaus (shoulder) for the season.
Second-year lineman David Stefanuk is expected to step up in
Hillier’s absence, while Jeff Lukomski will move into a starting
role for Knaus. Hillier wasn’t the only casualty suffered by the
offensive line, as both Brenden Bennett and Chris Mercer were
injured against Manitoba and are listed as questionable for
Friday’s game.
Two Huskies earned Canada West Player of the Week honours
following their tilt against Calgary. Safety Bryce McCall earned
defensive honours after recording 4½ tackles and two
interceptions, while Travis Gorski was named the conference’s
Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a missed field
goal for a 118-yard touchdown. Saskatchewan quarterback Laurence
Nixon completed 21 of 33 passes for 304 yards, while Scott
McHenry was the team’s top receiver with five catches for 106
yards.
The Rams and Saskatchewan will also meet in the final week of
the Canada West schedule, as the two teams will play in Regina
on Friday, Oct. 30 at Mosaic Stadium.
Michael Ball and Chad Ehman will have the call live on 620 CKRM
in Regina or on the Internet at
www.620ckrm.com. Saskatchewan’s feed can be picked up at
CK750 or www.ck750.com. The
game will also be available for viewing mid-week following the
game on SaskTel Max Local on Demand.
